Naseeruddin Shah Schools Indian Muslims Supporting the Taliban

He called Indian Muslims celebrating the Taliban takeover dangerous

Naseeruddin Shah - Taliban

As many Taliban supporters crawl out of the woodwork after their takeover in Afghanistan, Naseeruddin Shah is schooling Muslims for such attitudes. The Bollywood star called out how dangerous this is.

The Najaiz actor criticized ‘sections of Indian Muslims celebrating the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan’. He said this is rather dangerous.

“Even as the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan is a cause for concern for the whole world, celebrations of the barbarians by some sections of Indian Muslims is no less dangerous.”

In a recent video, the Mohra actor schooled those celebrating the Taliban takeover, suggesting they ask themselves,

“If they want a reformed, modern Islam (jiddat pasandi modernity), or live with the old barbarism (vaishipan) of the past few centuries.”

Naseeruddin Shah pointed out distinctions between ‘Hindustani Islam’ and how Islam is practiced in other parts of the world. He prayed that Islam must not be twisted to a point that it is no longer recognizable as ‘the religion of peace.’

“May God not bring a time when it changes so much that we cannot even recognize it.”

The actor also touched on his personal relationship with God, and that he doesn’t need political religion.

“I am an Indian Muslim and as Mirza Ghalib said years ago, my relationship with God is informal. I don’t need political religion.”

Taliban Takeover and Reports Of Human Rights Violations

Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan on August 15th after days of armed conflict with Afghan security forces, leading to them seizing control of all provincial capitals and the national capital Kabul. Currently, Panjshir remains the last stronghold against the Taliban. People have taken up arms to defend their territory as the Taliban’s military offensive continues.

Forcing your ideas on anyone through militancy is deplorable. Additionally to politicize religion for these means is even more despicable. From using religion to dictate freedom of speech, to access to education and information.

Soon after the takeover, reports of forced marriage and minority massacres emerged. Amnesty International shared that the Taliban massacred ethnic Shiites Hazaras in Ghazni.

When Muslims are globally suffering the repercussions of Islamophobia, such actions will only add to that sentiment.
