Afghan Father Who Wants To Educate His Girls in War-Torn Afghanistan Goes Viral

This unsung hero’s story must be heard.

Mia Khan

Mia Khan from Afghanistan’s Paktika province is an ideal candidate for the ‘father of the year’ award. His bravery and commitment to education was recently highlighted in a viral social media post.

In war-torn Afghanistan, where educating girls is looked down upon, Mia Khan isn’t letting ‘traditional’ attitudes in the way of doing what’s best for his daughter.

He takes his three daughters to the Nooraniya school, which is some 12 kilometers away from home. He commutes on his motorcycle daily.

By itself, this could be a pretty normal thing. But this is war-scarred Afghanistan we are talking about. So concerned about their safety is Mia Khan that he waits for four hours for his daughters’ classes to end, and then take them home.

This is all the more remarkable when you get to know that Mia Khan is an illiterate man himself. However, he wants his daughter to be a doctor. Why a doctor? That’s because their village doesn’t have a lady medical practitioner.

Here’s what he says about his decision to educate his daughters:

“I am illiterate, and I live on daily wage, but my daughters’ education is very valuable to me because there is no female doctor in our area. It is my greatest desire to educate my daughters like my sons”.

The Nooraniya school is run by the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan. According to the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, all three of Mia Khan’s daughters go to this school. The reason Mia Khan chose this school was because of the quality of education they provide.

His inspiring story is now making rounds on the Internet. Netizens are making his story heard.

While one’s socio-economic background does determine the opportunities they receive, some people go out of their way to ensure their children have everything they didn’t.

People are pointing out why we shouldn’t judge people based on their situation. Mia Khan’s turban and beard do not set him apart from every parent wanting a better future for their children.
