Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy, ruled Oscar 2024 with 13 nominations.
In a surprising turn of events, the recently announced 96th Academy Award nominations for Oscar 2024 left some notable talents out of the race, sparking reactions from actors and fans alike.
Director Greta Gerwig and actress Margot Robbie, instrumental in the success of the box office hit Barbie in 2023, were notably absent from the list of nominees for Best Director and Lead Actress, respectively.
Despite the disappointment, Ryan Gosling, who secured a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Barbie, voiced his support for Gerwig and Robbie. In a statement, Gosling praised their “talent, grit, and genius,” emphasizing their crucial roles in the making of the globally-celebrated film.
Leonardo DiCaprio, the lead actor in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, also found himself snubbed in the Best Actor category.
Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon managed to secure two of the ten Best Picture nominations, but they face fierce competition from the frontrunner Oppenheimer, which dominated the nominations with an impressive 13 nods.
Greta Gerwig, however, received recognition for her work, earning a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside her husband, Noah Baumbach.
Barbie broke records, earning over $1.4 billion worldwide in 2023. The film received a total of eight nominations, showcasing its impact on the industry. Margot Robbie’s involvement as a producer contributed to the film’s nod for Best Picture.
Ryan Gosling, who portrayed Ken opposite Robbie’s Barbie, expressed his gratitude for his Best Supporting Actor nomination but acknowledged the significant contributions of Gerwig and Robbie to the film’s success. He stated, “There is no Ken without Barbie,” emphasizing the integral role played by the director and lead actress in the making of the history-making film.
While some acclaimed names, such as Bradley Cooper and Penelope Cruz, were left off the nominations list, other films faced surprising oversights.
The Color Purple, a musical adaptation of the 1982 book and 1985 film, received only one nomination for Danielle Brooks in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Here is the complete list of nominations for 2024 Oscar that was unveiled on Tuesday.
