Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer is in talks to reimagine the national anthem of Saudi Arabia.
Yes, you read that right—the Hans Zimmer, the man behind the spine-tingling scores of The Lion King, Inception, and Dune, might soon be putting his signature cinematic spin on Saudi Arabia’s most patriotic tune.
The idea was floated during the Joy Awards in Riyadh, where Zimmer crossed paths with Turki Alalshikh, the ever-ambitious chairman of the General Entertainment Authority (GEA). Alalshikh, who’s known for pulling off big cultural coups, revealed that discussions with the Oscar-winning composer went beyond just the anthem.
The two also explored the possibility of Zimmer creating a musical piece titled Arabia and even scoring a soundtrack for a film about the historic Battle of Yarmouk. Talk about a packed to-do list.
Reimagining a national anthem is no small feat, but if anyone can do it, it’s Zimmer. Alalshikh hinted that the new interpretation could involve varied instrumentation, blending traditional Saudi sounds with Zimmer’s signature orchestral grandeur.
While details remain under wraps, the idea of Zimmer lending his genius to such a culturally significant project has already sparked excitement. It’s not every day that a composer of his caliber takes on a national anthem, and the potential for a fresh, globally resonant sound is undeniable.
But wait, there’s more. Alalshikh also teased a standalone musical piece titled Arabia, which Zimmer could compose as a tribute to the region’s rich history and culture.
As if reimagining the national anthem of Saudi Arabia wasn’t enough, Hans Zimmer might also lend his talents to a film about the Battle of Yarmouk.
And because Turki Alalshikh doesn’t do things halfway, he also hinted at the possibility of Hans Zimmer performing live in Riyadh as part of a future Riyadh Season.
