Oscar-Winning Filmmaker Asif Kapadia to Direct Roger Federer Documentary

Prime Video has announced the greenlighting of a feature-length documentary chronicling the poignant final 12 days of tennis legend Roger Federer and his illustrious career.

The yet-to-be-titled documentary promises an intimate portrayal of Federer’s farewell to the sport, capturing candid moments of vulnerability and reflection as he bids adieu to the game that has defined his life for the past two decades.

Directed by Asif Kapadia, the Oscar and BAFTA-winning filmmaker renowned for his acclaimed documentaries such as Amy, Senna, and Diego Maradona, the film is poised to offer viewers an insider’s perspective into Federer’s final days on the court.

Co-directed by Joe Sabia, known for his work on Vogue’s 73 Questions franchise, the documentary will feature exclusive interviews with Federer’s closest friends and rivals, including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.

Described as an “intimate follow-along,” the documentary originated from home videos never intended for public viewing, offering a rare glimpse into Federer’s personal journey as he bids farewell to tennis.

Roger Federer himself expressed his initial reluctance to have cameras documenting his final moments on the court but ultimately embraced the project, recognizing its potential to resonate with audiences worldwide. He stated,

In my career, I tended to shy away from having cameras around me and my family, especially during important moments. But I didn’t see the harm in shooting this as it was never intended for the public. However, we captured so many powerful moments, and it transformed into a deeply personal journey.

Presented by Prime Video, the Roger Federer documentary is a production of Lafcadia Productions, helmed by Asif Kapadia and George Chignell. With Federer’s unparalleled legacy in the tennis world, boasting 20 Grand Slam men’s singles titles, including a record eight Wimbledon wins, the documentary is poised to offer a comprehensive look at his extraordinary career.

Set for release in July, coinciding with the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, the documentary promises to resonate not only with tennis enthusiasts but also with broader audiences worldwide. Federer’s story of determination, resilience, and grace on and off the court is poised to captivate viewers, offering a fitting tribute to a true sporting icon.

As anticipation builds for the release of this intimate portrayal of Roger Federer’s final days in tennis, fans eagerly await the opportunity to witness the legend’s remarkable journey unfold on screen.
