Oye Moti

Express TV’s drama Oye Moti is the latest talk of the town but for all the wrong reasons. It has undoubtedly become the most criticized drama ever since the teaser of its Episode 9 was released. But according to Kanwal Aftab, it’s not trying to promote body shaming but actually sheds light on the growing issue in our society.

The plot is pretty simple. Each episode has a separate storyline and features different women who are constantly mocked over their bodies. Hence the name, Oye Moti.  However, they manage to overcome whatever hurdle comes their way.

Why the Oye Moti teaser sparked fury?

Episode 9 features TikToker Kanwal Aftab and Furqan Qureshi and the teaser has stirred outrage on social media. It follows the story of a woman who weighs over 160 Kgs and is often told to lose weight. But she isn’t bothered in the least. We even hear her say,

“Why should I make my life a living hell for fear of death?”

The story takes a turn and we see her getting engaged with a handsome, young man, but right after their engagement, her fiancé announces in front of everyone that her bride-to-be must lose 100 kgs within a year, threatening to otherwise call off the wedding.

People have been really angry to see the teaser and actually feel that it is ‘offensive’ and promotes fatphobia. It is a long-standing issue and netizens think that Oye Moti just adds fuel to the fire.

Kanwal Aftab clears the air

It turns out that the series does not mock anyone, but in fact is an honest attempt to highlight the issue of body shaming in our society. It won’t be wrong to say that the drama is a reflection of our society which refuses to accept women beyond their weights or size.

Taking to her Instagram, Kanwal Aftab shared the teaser and said that she worked hard for this project because she stands with those who face these stereotypes every day. She wrote,

“This is one of the projects that I’ve worked really hard on, and I only did it for those of us who are always subjected to body shaming. We don’t let the overweight live in peace, nor do we let the underweight live in peace. Be happy, and let others be happy.”
