Pakistani Vocalist Makes It To Barack Obama’s Summer Playlist

When former United States President Barack Obama shared his summer playlist, one name in particular, stood out for Pakistani Twitter.

For the former president, the playlist reflects his festive mood as people can finally get together with family after a year apart.

“With so many folks getting together with family and friends, there’s a lot to celebrate this summer. Here’s a playlist of songs I’ve been listening to lately—it’s a mix of old and new, household names and emerging artists, and a whole lot in between.”

Among names like Bob Marley, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, etc was Arooj Aftab. Then again Barack Obama’s playlist also has names like Erykah Badu and Rumaan Alam.

How many of you noticed these names on the summer playlist 2021?

So who is this Arooj Aftab? Although an Urdu singer, based on her work shared on her YouTube channel we can safely say this artist is based in the United States. It’s heartwarming to see the young woman holding on to both parts of her cultural identity.

Her soulful tracks feature Urdu vocals to contemporary fusion music. Check out her track Mohabbat that was on Obama’s summer playlist.
