Punjab Govt Announces Tax Relief For Cinemas

A good move.

With the economy going through a really rough patch right now, Pakistani cinema houses are also in a tight spot. The Punjab government has decided that movie theaters deserve relief like any other business.

The government of Punjab has announced that all movie theaters have been exempt from paying taxes for a year. This decision couldn’t have come at a better time than when people are cooped up in their homes spending more time than ever exploring artwork from books to films and even long-form television.

Since we’re paying so much attention to the arts now, this is one of the few industries that are keeping us occupied through the economic crisis. Therefore, spurring economic activity in this industry by providing them some relief seems like a good move.

That’s what the Punjab government did. According to GNN News, the Excise & Taxation department issued a notification stating that cinemas will be exempted from the tax from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021.

Meanwhile, newly-constructed movie theaters will enjoy this relaxation for five years. The five years will be counted from the date the theater is opened.

Recently the Punjab government also reduced entertainment duty to 5% from 20% in the budget.
