British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been charged with five sexual offences, including rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault, by London’s Metropolitan Police. The charges, which Brand denies, relate to alleged incidents involving four women between 1999 and 2005.

Brand, 49, who rose to fame with his provocative comedy routines and later gained international attention as the ex-husband of pop star Katy Perry, responded to the allegations in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter). “I was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord. I was a drug addict, a sex addict, and an imbecile, but what I never was, was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in nonconsensual activity,” he said.

The charges follow a police investigation launched after a 2023 Channel 4 documentary brought the allegations to light. Jaswant Narwal of Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service stated, “We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation and concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault.”

Brand is accused of raping a woman in Bournemouth in 1999, committing oral rape and sexual assault in Westminster in 2004, indecently assaulting a woman in 2001, and sexually assaulting another woman between 2004 and 2005. He is set to appear in Westminster Magistrate’s Court on May 2.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy urged anyone with information to come forward, stating the investigation remains open.

Brand, now 49, has had a colorful career, transitioning from a provocative comedian to a Hollywood actor and later an anti-establishment figure with millions of followers online. Known for his conspiracy theories and outspoken views, he has 7 million YouTube subscribers, 11.3 million followers on X, and 4.8 million on Instagram.

Brand, who now lives in the United States, is married to author Laura Gallacher, with whom he shares three children. While he expressed gratitude for the “opportunity” to defend himself, the charges mark a significant moment in the ongoing investigation into his past.
