Actress and model, Sajal Aly is set to star in the upcoming series adaptation of the classic Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada.
Published back in 1899, Umrao Jaan Ada, by writer Mirza Hadi Ruswa, is considered to be the first Urdu novel. The story revolves around the life of a poet and courtesan of the same name set around the 19th century society and culture of the Indian subcontinent.
Presented by Abu Dhabi-based South Asian celebrity management agency, Action Consultancy, producers Hamid Hussain and Muhammad Yaqoob will bring to life this classic period-piece. Hamid Hussain spoke with a media outlet to reveal more details about the upcoming series. He stated that the series will rely “heavily on the original Urdu version of the novel, unlike the film adaptations that had taken creative liberties to fit the story into a film narrative”.
Hamid further added that “there is a lot in the novel that has never been shown in an audiovisual project”.
After What’s Love Got To Do With It? this will Sajal Aly’s second major project starring as as strong female lead. Umrao Jaan Ada is currently in the works and is expected to premiere at a major streaming platform soon.
