Savera Nadeem Tells Us How She Got Her Break in Showbiz

Things have changed.

Savera Nadeem

Savera Nadeem is a veteran Pakistani actress, producer, and director. She has worked in a number of television shows and has recently gained a lot of popularity among viewers for her role in Mere Paas Tum Ho.

In an interview with The Express Tribune, Savera revealed the ins and outs of working in the showbiz industry.

The Haiwan star didn’t exactly have an easy start, as she faced many challenges. The 46-year-old said,

When I started off, it was not easy to break into the industry. Actors used to work very hard, day and night to make a name for themselves.

Savera Nadeem also stated that the showbiz industry isn’t what it was some years ago, which is both a negative and positive thing depending on who you ask.

I believe that today there is a lack of depth and drive. In our times there was not much exposure and things weren’t available as easily, like they are today.

Today the industry has opened its doors and it’s good to see that a lot of talented people are coming forward.

However, when it comes to agreeing to work for a project, the Baba Jani star is very particular. According to her, one should feel proud of and respected in any assignment that they work for.

I prefer working in a certain environment where there’s comfort for actors, especially for women while they are dressing up and getting ready. There should be a sense of privacy for actors.

Acting is sensitive work and when one is exposed to these things they become even more so and that can really affect our work and performance. We should be comfortable, feel respected and proud of our work. I am particular about this.

She also holds the opinion that when it comes to giving interviews and maintaining one’s decorum, experience matters a lot.

Senior actors are used to giving interviews and being in the limelight so they understand the seriousness of the medium. New actors need time to learn and bring proficiency.

We all know that actresses have to meet certain criteria when it comes to their looks and the pre-set beauty standards of the media industry. But, they can’t go far with just their charm. The actress from Badi Aapa says that their ability to act matters profoundly.

Beauty is a plus point but acting skills count the most. An actor has to be relatable to the viewers. His/her acting should connect with the viewer like the stories. There are a lot of things that count except beauty; impression and screen presence count as well.

Having worked in a lot of TV shows, Savera knows that the entertainment industry lacks creativity when it comes to roles written out for female characters. She wants to see a shift in the typical perception of women shown in these dramas.

There are so many facets of a woman’s personality, so many dimensions to explore then why do we revolve around one or two topics? We have amazing stories of female athletes, cricketers and etc.

I agree that women are subject to abuse and many dramas courageously speak about them but there are many positive aspects that should be highlighted as well.

Having studied from the National School of Drama, there is no doubt that the actress got a lot of offers to work in films. However, she has one condition; She will only accept offers with good roles.

Unlike most of the celebrities in Pakistan (and elsewhere), the Qaid-e-Tehreek star is appalled at how much social media has taken over everyone’s lives.

Instagram addiction is not good. Sometimes I find it awful that we are after everybody and watching them all the time.

Sometimes I think, what politics is there in having millions of views and likes? It truly has become a game that everyone has to play.

So, how are things going for her in her personal life, especially given the current lockdown situation?

It might be tough for others to stay at home but I am spending quality time with my husband and kids and it is good for me.

The mother of two believes with experience comes awareness.

I feel you become a better actor when you experience life more, when you know more nuances, and depth of emotions. Marriage has brought maturity to my work,

The very talented and graceful actress has earned the respect of many by staying true and sincere to who she is. In a world that’s otherwise known for its turbulence, Savera Nadeem has made her own safe space.
