Shahnaz Begum, The Singer Behind ‘Sohni Dharti’ and ‘Jeevay Pakistan’ Passes Away

The loss of the voice behind Sohni Dharti, a loss to cultural heritage

Shahnaz Begum, who sang the evergreen anthem Sohni Dharti, passed away on 23rd March 2019.

While this Pakistan Day, we saw many Pakistani artists honored for their contributions to culture and society, we also lost a gem.

Shahnaz Rahmatullah passed away in Dhaka, after suffering a heart attack at the age of 67. She is survived by two children and a husband.

Jeevay Pakistan

The famed singer vocalist is responsible for many other iconic national songs such as Jeevay Jeevay Pakistan and Sohni Dharti .She was known as the ‘Queen of Ghazal’ in her prime.

The Sohni Dharti singer was born in Dhaka in 1952. Back then this was East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).

Pakistan has lost a legend in Shahnaz Begum.

Their mark on our cultural reservoir, particularly cinema, still remains strong. Shahnaz Begum is an enduring example of that.

The songstress was given the Ekushey Padak Award in 1992.

She even received a Bangladesh Film Award for best background female singer for Chhutir Phande (1990). The iconic singer rose to fame in Bangladesh back in the 1960s and 1970s.
