A rare Indus River Dolphin was captured and killed by the local community of Nawabshah in Sindh. The incident sparked an outrage on social media as the public demands action against the perpetrators and justice for the inhumane treatment of a nearly endangered wildlife.
Indus River Dolphin is a rare freshwater dolphin species found in the subcontinent. According to World Wildlife Federation (WWF), it is considered to be the second most endangered freshwater mammal.
Due to the construction of irrigation systems near the Indus River, the species’ numbers have declined at an alarming rate. Majority of these rare dolphins are confined to a 750-mile stretch of river or have been divided into an isolated population by six barrages.
Unfortunately, the local population does not seem to care as another video of these creatures being hunted and killed went viral on social media.

Recently, a video made rounds on social media that show an Indus River Dolphin being caught, beaten, thrown and then killed by the locals of the area. This brutal, atrocious and distressing incident took place in Nawabshah, Sindh. Here is the video:

The Sindh Wildlife Department is working on apprehending the perpetrators responsible for this utterly barbaric incident. Meanwhile, people on social media are up in arms, calling out the authorities to take action as soon as possible.
In accordance to provision of section 9 and 21 of the Sindh Wildlife Act 2020, a criminal case has been registered against the culprits.
Meanwhile, a multi-million dollar wetland program is in the works, which aims to educate people about the importance of these species.
