“The City of Lights” certainly lived up to its name as Karachi experienced a meteor shower last night.

While an asteroid is heading our way in 2032, we can enjoy a few passing us by. Karachiites were in for a cosmic treat last night as a meteor shower lit up the city’s skies, leaving residents awestruck and social media buzzing.

The celestial spectacle, visible across various parts of the city, turned the typically smoggy Karachi night into a canvas of dazzling streaks of light, resembling broken stars scattered across the heavens.

From Nazimabad to North Nazimabad, Orangi Town, and beyond, Karachi residents craned their necks to catch a glimpse of the meteors, which are often referred to as “shooting stars” or “fireballs.” Videos of the event quickly flooded social media, with amateur astronomers and casual stargazers alike capturing the breathtaking moment on their mobile phones.

Astronomers were quick to explain the science behind the magic. Meteors are celestial objects that orbit the Sun and occasionally find themselves pulled into Earth’s atmosphere by its gravity. As they hurtle toward the planet, the friction with the atmosphere causes them to ignite, creating the brilliant streaks of light that we see from the ground.

“These luminous trails are caused by the meteors burning up in the atmosphere before they can hit the ground,” explained one expert. “The streaks of light are what we call meteors, while the objects themselves are referred to as meteorites.”

For Karachiites, the meteor shower was a rare and extraordinary sight, adding a touch of wonder to the city’s usual hustle and bustle. Many described the experience as surreal, with one resident joking, “For once, Karachi’s lights weren’t just from traffic jams or load-shedding candles!”
