This year the organizers of Aurat March did something very different by arranging a special skit. The skit was staged as a hilarious dig at Ali Zafar and Meesha Shafi’s defamation case. Here are some snippets from the play.

Who is the Silly Duffer?

‘Silly Duffer’ was shown as a character in the play who harassed his costar behind the doors. The costar was quick to admonish him right away, but Duffer didn’t appear abashed at all. The costar then goes public with the accusation, taking the mike and telling everyone what he did to her. In the next scene, ‘Silly Duffer’ is seen crying in front of the press about this accusation. He claims that he was actually framed! Using Section 499 he then initiated a defamation lawsuit against the costar. Although the actors or the organizers didn’t explicitly name Ali Zafar, the alias ‘Silly Duffer’ gave it all away. ‘Silly Duffer sharam karu, defamation khatam karu!’

The crowd cheered the actors and laughed their hearts out. The satirical play was a perfect depiction of the discrimination and harassment, women from all walks of life have to face. Yet everything was done with such intelligence that everyone was compelled to praise the play.

What’s the update on Ali Zafar and Meesha Shafi’s case?

For all of you wondering what actually happened in the Ali Zafar and Meesha Shafi’s defamation case, here’s a quick update. Federal investigation Agency has declared Meesha Shafi and eight others guilty in the case and has accused Ms. Shafi of running a vilification campaign against Ali Zafar.

While the fight is still on, we don’t exactly know how things will turn up. But for now, Aurat March has done more than enough to highlight the deep-rooted misogyny in our society and its lasting impact on the women of Pakistan. No matter how tough the challenge is, it is important that women continue to fight for their cause.
