Sourav Ganguly and Daughter Sana Ganguly are at Odds Over Anti-Muslim Law

Trouble between father and daughter?

Sourav Ganguly - Sana Ganguly

Amid all the unrest in India following the Modi government’s Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA), many Indian citizens have fears about voicing their dissent. How much fear? This just became clear after what happened between former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly and his daughter Sana on Instagram.

Sana shared her thoughts about how CAA 2019 is not good for India and that too in a poetic manner. Here’s what happened next.

While many are reluctant to say a word against CAA 2019, secular India is still raising its head and Sourav Ganguly’s daughter Sana Ganguly seems to be one of those people. Sana Ganguly shared a relevant excerpt from Khushwant Singh’s ‘The End of India‘.

“Every fascist regime needs communities and groups it can demonize in order to thrive. It starts with one group or two. But it never ends there. A movement built on hate can only sustain itself by continually creating fear and strife. Those of us today who feel secure because we are not Muslims or Christians are living in a fool’s paradise. The Sangh is already targeting the Leftist historians and “Westernized” youth.

Tomorrow it will turn its hate on women who wear skirts, people who eat meat, drink liquor, watch foreign films, don’t go on annual pilgrimages to temples, use toothpaste instead of danth manjan, prefer allopathic doctors to vaids, kiss or shake hands in greeting instead of shouting ‘Jai Shri Ram’. No one is safe. We must realize this if we hope to keep India alive,”

This passage is from Khushwant Singh’s book published in 2003. It looks back on violence in the sub-continent amid the partition. From the segregation to pillaging villages and trains.

Khushwant Singh writes about how the people of the sub-continent shed blood and tainted the motherland. In the author’s opinion, he had seen the worst that India could do to herself. The book calls for compassion and apathy towards the different sects from the soil.

What side did Sana choose?

Sana Ganguly made it clear which side she’s supporting as Delhi police continue to crack down on student protesters of Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia. Protests against the discriminatory citizenship law continue all across India.

Despite all the unrest and people such as Sana Ganguly speaking out against CAA 2019 and being lauded for it, the sports fraternity including Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) president, Sourav Ganguly remains silent on the issue.

In fact, Sourav Ganguly is even calling for Sana Ganguly not to be taken seriously. He wants his daughter left out of all this as she’s too young to know about anything in politics.

“Please keep Sana out of all this issues .. this post is not true .. she is too young a girl to know about anything in politics,”

This may be a father trying to shield his daughter from the uglier aspects of modern day India. But its also important to note that legally, she’s old enough to make her own decisions. Sana has decided what side she’s on.
