India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially closed the high-profile case surrounding the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, ruling out any foul play after nearly five years of investigation.
The CBI filed closure reports in both cases linked to Rajput’s death, bringing the long saga one step closer to a legal conclusion.
The final reports submitted to a special court in Patna and a Mumbai court concluded that there was no evidence of external pressure or criminal conspiracy involved in Rajput’s tragic demise. The investigation had been a whirlwind of speculation, conspiracy theories, and media frenzy since Rajput was found dead in his Mumbai residence on June 14, 2020.
The first case was initiated by Rajput’s father, K K Singh, who accused Rhea Chakraborty, the actor’s girlfriend at the time, of abetment to suicide and financial misconduct. In a twist, Chakraborty herself filed a counter-case alleging that Rajput’s sister was involved in medical malpractice. However, the CBI has reportedly cleared Chakraborty and her family of any wrongdoing.
The CBI’s findings align with the forensic report from AIIMS, which dismissed theories of strangulation or poisoning. Sushant Singh Rajput’s postmortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxia due to hanging, putting to rest many of the wild theories that had circulated.
Chakraborty’s lawyer, Satish Maneshinde, expressed relief and gratitude, stating, “We are grateful to the CBI for having thoroughly investigated every aspect of the case from all angles and closed the case.”
Now, the ball is in the courts’ court—whether to accept the CBI’s findings or call for further investigation remains to be seen. As the dust settles on this tragic chapter, many hope for closure for Rajput’s family and fans alike.
