Oscars host, Jimmy Kimmel had a cringey segment with Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai during the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday night.
The renowned Pakistani activist made her Oscars debut last night, attending the award show with her husband Asser Malik. Kimmel made the young activist visibly uncomfortable with a nonsensical question and making a racist joke about her name.
Netizens slammed the host for the awkward segment, and applauded Malala for giving a decent response to Kimmel’s bizarre question.
Malala Yousafzai graced the prestigious Oscar ceremony in a sequinned silver hooded gown by Ralph Lauren. She attended the 2023 Oscars in support of the documentary film Stranger at the Gate for which she is an executive producer.
The 25-year-old activist caught the eye of host Jimmy Kimmel, who decided to ask her a “fan question”, saying, “Your work on human rights and education for women and children is an inspiration–as the youngest Nobel prize winner in history, do you think Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine?”
The question refers to the rumors of a spat between the Don’t Worry Darling stars Harry Styles and Chris Pine.
Malala, who seemed uneasy, simply said,
I only talk about peace.
Things got even more cringey when Kimmel brought out “Cocaine Bear,” a character from Elizabeth Banks’ film that started pestering the activist just so he could say the line: “Cocaine Bear, leave Malala alone!”
Netizens slammed Jimmy for harassing Malala as one tweep wrote, “I actually thought Jimmy was about to ask Malala Yousafzai a serious question and then he asked her a stupid one! What a stupid segment.”
