What is it with people and their lack of dread for the current pandemic that is sweeping worldwide? We all know that laughter is the best medicine, but to downplay a serious life-threatening virus such as the COVID-19 is just wrong. Three locals from Bannu district had to learn this the hard way.
A while back, three men from that district decided it would be ‘hilarious’ to sing and compose a Pashto song that states the coronavirus is all but a fraud. These men, including a cleric, were later taken into police custody after the video gained some traction among the Pashto-speaking population as it went viral on social media.
People with common sense about the severity of the issue reported the video and urged the Deputy Commissioner of Bannu to take down the video. The police were ordered to take action against these men who trivialized the deadly COVID-19.
The culprits were soon apprehended. New video and pictures, showing the men behind bars, surfaced on social media. The men admitted their mistake and sought forgiveness for their actions.
“Now we know coronavirus is a disease and is a reality as it is spreading in Pakistan and all over the world. We were clearly at fault and we now urge the people to take care and protect themselves from coronavirus,” said one of the culprits sheepishly.
While the lockdown may be in effect all around the country, the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise in Pakistan as well as around the world. It is time to stop mocking this deadly virus and for once, do our part to help end it. Stay home, stay safe and of course, stay posted for more updates.
