After the defeat of the Indian team against Pakistan in the T20 world cup, the only Muslim player in Team India Muhammad Shami received backlash and abuses from Indian extremists. Virat Kohli as the team Captain stood up in defense of his fellow teammate, which triggered a floodgate of abuses and rape threats to his 10-month-old daughter.
The India skipper and now captain Virat Kohli is known for his bold statements and taking a stand against what he feels is wrong. This time he came to support Mohammad Shami, who was abused and trolled on social media platforms for being a Muslim and hence, a ‘traitor’.
Issuing a strong statement against these trolls he said,
“To me, attacking someone over their religion is the most pathetic thing that a human being can do. Everyone has the right to voice their opinion and what they feel about a certain situation. But personally, I have never, ever thought of discriminating against someone over their religion”.
He added
“That is a very personal and sacred thing to every human being and that should be left there. People take out their frustrations because they have no understanding of what we do as individuals and how much effort we put on the field.”
However, some people couldn’t digest it and started threatening his 10-month old daughter Vamika for rape.
Twitter strongly acted in response to it and spoke out in one voice against shameful threats issued to Anuskha Sharma and Virat Kholi’s daughter.

This is not the first time cricketers’ families in India got threats. Before this, MS Dhoni’s daughter was also pointed out for rape threats after his performance in IPL 2020. Their love for the game is forgotten, and what is left over is pure hate. Netizens are now sure that “Modi’s India” is propagating extremist behaviors and hatred towards minorities.
