‘Uncle Sargam’: Google Pays Tribute to the Late Artist Farooq Qaiser

The renowned puppeteer passed away in 2021.

Google has paid tribute to Pakistan’s legendary puppeteer and artist, Farooq Qaiser with a doodle of the beloved Uncle Sargam to celebrate what would have been his 78th birthday.

Farooq Qaiser  was a beloved figure who brought laughter and joy to countless children and adults throughout his illustrious career. Born in 1945 in Sialkot, Punjab, Qaiser’s journey into the world of puppetry began during his Fine Art studies at the National College of Arts in Lahore.

His exceptional talent as a show writer and puppet maker led him to the renowned children’s television series Akka Bakkar in 1971.

Qaiser’s insatiable thirst for knowledge and his passion for the arts led him to pursue education abroad. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from the University of Bucharest and a master’s degree in mass communications from the University of Southern California.

In 1976, Farooq Qaiser embarked on creating his own children’s show, Kaliyan. The show was eventually broadcast on PTV, captivating families across the nation. The central character, Uncle Sargam, quickly became an endearing and relatable figure, making the show enjoyable for parents who watched alongside their children.

 

Farooq Qaiser’s contributions to education and entertainment in Pakistan through television garnered widespread recognition. He received several awards, including the Presidential Pride of Performance in 1993, the title of ‘Master Puppeteer’ by UNICEF in 1997, and the PTV Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.

Farooq Qaiser’s enduring legacy continues to inspire and educate generations. His iconic creation, Uncle Sargam, remains a beloved figure, reminding us of the lasting impact of art and storytelling in shaping the minds of both the young and the young at heart.
