Wasim Akram ‘Becomes’ the Mayor of Karachi and Pakistani Twitter Has a Lot to Say About It

Maybe second time’s the charm?

Shaniera Akram and Wasim Akram

Now most of the world knows Wasim Akram as one of the finest pacers Pakistan has ever produced. After all, he did terrorize many batsmen from around the world in his heyday.

And then we have Waseem Akhtar, the current mayor of Karachi and an office bearer of a political party in the city. Those who know about Pakistani politics are familiar with him.

Wasim Akram and Wasim Akhtar – the two names do sound somewhat similar when said together. Apparently an editor at an Urdu language newspaper was thinking along the same lines when he published a report regarding the mayor of Karachi.

You can see what happened here:

This isn’t the first time this has happened as once fine day back in 2017 another gentleman mistook the former Pakistani cricket captain as the Mayor of Karachi.

In this day and age with better communication thanks to technology as well as right to information laws its a lot easier to verify information. One wonders why the newspaper got his picture wrong.

Maybe all brown folk do look alike? Lets check here:

All this being said, one Australian-Pakistani can certainly tell the difference. She took to Twitter to voice her surprise at the overnight appointment of Wasim Akram as Mayor Karachi.

Mrs. Akram certainly does make a helluva good point here. These are decisions you usually talk through with your partner.

Its clear as day that Shaniera Akram’s dang sense of humor made headlines more than the actual job switching news.

While some fans were supportive of the Sultan of Swing, the rest of us had a field day on Twitter.

One person revealed that these fact-check mistakes can happen to the best of us, in this case BBC.

You know what they say about third time’s being the charm. But we all wish Wasim Akram the best as he has recently being announced as the President of Karachi Kings recently. Here’s to hoping it stays that way.
