Who is Zohran Mamdani’s Wife Whom He Met on a Famous Dating App?

When Zohran Mamdani made history as New York City’s first-ever Muslim, South Asian, and youngest mayor, one of the most emotional moments of his victory speech came when he turned to thank his wife, Rama Duwaji. “To my incredible wife, Rama—hayati,” he said, using the Arabic word for my life. “There’s no one I’d rather have by my side in this moment, and in every moment.”

A Modern Love Story Born on a Dating App

The couple’s story began in an entirely modern way—they met on the popular dating app Hinge. Their first connection quickly blossomed into a deep relationship built on shared values, creativity, and activism. After dating for a few years, they tied the knot in February this year at the New York City Clerk’s Office.

In an interview, Mamdani described the experience of their civil wedding fondly: “All these New Yorkers getting married at different stages of life—it’s really beautiful.” The two later celebrated a second ceremony in Uganda, Mamdani’s birthplace, in July.

Who Is Rama Duwaji?

Born in Houston, Texas, in 1997, Rama spent much of her childhood in Dubai, where her family relocated when she was nine. She later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2019 and moved to New York City in 2021 to pursue art full-time.

Her passion for art led her to complete a Master of Fine Arts in Illustration as Visual Essay from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in 2023. Since then, her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and Vogue, and she has collaborated with major clients like Apple, Spotify, and the Tate Modern.

While most of her art is digital, she also creates handmade ceramics and has previously taught workshops on illustration and animation.

Art Meets Activism

Duwaji describes her art as deeply political. In an April post titled “Art in Times of Crisis,” she wrote, “Art is inherently political—in how it’s made, funded, and shared.” Her work often explores themes of identity, displacement, and resistance, reflecting her Syrian-American background.

She has also expressed solidarity with Palestinians, notably through a powerful animation showing a child holding an empty pot with the words “Not a hunger crisis” and “It is deliberate starvation.”

Facing Public Scrutiny

Despite being the city’s new First Lady, Rama has largely maintained a low profile. She rarely appears in campaign events or public interviews, preferring to let her work speak for itself. However, this discretion drew criticism from some political commentators online, who accused Mamdani of “hiding” his wife during the campaign.

Mamdani responded strongly, posting black-and-white photos from their wedding on Instagram. “Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk’s office,” he wrote. “Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race—which should be about you—about her. Rama isn’t just my wife; she’s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms. You can critique my views, but not my family.”

A Partnership Built on Shared Beliefs

While she keeps a distance from the political limelight, Rama’s quiet support for her husband is evident. During the June primary, she posted a simple but heartfelt slideshow captioned with encouragement for Zohran—a glimpse into their private, supportive relationship.

Zohran Mamdani and Rama Duwaji’s story—beginning with a swipe on a dating app and culminating in a shared life rooted in activism, art, and public service—reflects a new kind of political partnership: one built on authenticity, mutual respect, and love in the digital age.
