Painters have long been regarded as an integral part of the construction business. In most parts of the world, painters are given proper protective gear so that they can do their work in a safe environment. Alas, that doesn’t seem to be the case in Pakistan.
Be it a local painter painting your ceiling or a professional one doing a whole commercial building in metropolitan, proper safety gear is nowhere to be found.
Such was the case with an unidentified painter who was seen doing a commercial building in Karachi’s in DHA phase 2 without any safety measures whatsoever.
Pictures of him, hanging from the building with the help of a rope and doing his job, have been making rounds on social media.
He is said to be painting the building situated opposite Imtiaz Super Market DHA Karachi.
While we understand that painters here don’t earn handsome enough to afford all such safety measures, but for a professional job, as it appears to be, the responsibility lies with the Builder/Contractor to take all safety measures and provide proper equipment before hiring labor for the job.
People on Facebook have shown serious concerns over the issue. While some suggested that the contractor and builder should be prosecuted and fined heavily for such negligence, others blamed the Ministry of human rights for not protecting the laborers’ rights.
There are growing calls for the contractor to be banished for not following the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) rules and guidelines.
