CDA Initiates Planning for Light Rail Transit System in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is taking steps to introduce a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in Islamabad, aiming to meet the growing transportation demands of the city.

The planning wing of the CDA has approached international donors, such as the Asian Development Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to secure funding for the project.

A preliminary concept paper has been prepared by the Planning Wing, and further progress on the project will require engaging a consultant for a detailed feasibility study.

Initial planning has identified four potential routes, including a 30.5km stretch from Rawat to Faisal Mosque on Islamabad Expressway and Faisal Avenue, a 13.7km route from N5 (G.T. Road) to Pakistan Monument via Srinagar Highway, a 27.5km route from Rawat at T-Chowk to 26 No Stop on G.T. Road, and a 10.4km route from Pirwadhai to Faizabad.

Besides, the city planners have ruled out utilizing the existing railway track in Islamabad due to its one-sided structure, primarily used for Pakistan Railways’ main traffic.

Member Planning and Design of CDA, Waseem Hayat Bajwa, confirmed that initial work has commenced in the traffic engineering section of the authority.

The CDA is in contact with the Economic Affairs Division to secure funding for the project, expressing optimism about its viability for Islamabad.

It is to note that the Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems are high-capacity public transport solutions that operate on exclusive rights-of-way, using electric railways.

Many developed countries have implemented such systems over a century ago to provide convenient transportation for their citizens.

Examples include the world’s first underground railway system in London, the subway system in New York City, and the subway system in Tokyo.

The decision to introduce the LRT in Islamabad stems from traffic congestion during peak hours on major roads in recent years.

Implementing the LRT system is seen as a cost-effective solution that not only reduces travel time but also addresses air pollution, noise pollution, fuel consumption, and environmental degradation.

  1. This is just a dream of Shekh Chilly in view of existing financial scenario. The country is on the brink of defaulting as our hope for getting some assistance from IMF are dieing down.
In such a situation,CDA should stop joking 😃 and think realistically how the available resources can be used wisely.

    1. Foreign investment hy pls read carefully its can happen like other projects

    2. When the M-1 Isb LHR was first initiated, some so called leaders and politicians were also opposing it and terming this project a far dream but later it had become reality, hence this LRT project if started with some firm commitment, certainty it will become Reality.

  2. This id good thinking of CDA but before taking any further step CDA/Govt. think
    1. No any rout will be close in any issue like as today is match transport close, today minister going transport close etc. 2. CDA go back and check it Islamabad original map, and see where is Islamabad Railway station and who change its location and make small station its away from metro bus stop. Its necessary to this railway station move to near metro bus stop for best benefit of Islamabad Rawalpindi public.
    3. Also necessary to Govt/CDA check and justified that all law are correct and use correct or wrong like as Govt./CDA give permission to private town planer to make town plan for public but here they have there own plot measurement not use stander measurement 272 saqure feet per marla. Who check this issue … ?
If any one discus they say this measurement (250 sq. ft/marla , now some decreasing to 225 sq. ft / marla) issue by CDA. And also they not issue registery etc .
I hope you never mind and check and take necessary action for public . benefit. To save people if any frauds.
And proud Govt /CDA that they think about peoples.
Thank you if you accept my perposel

  3. Economic stability and building infrastructure for future needs may go side by side Masood

  4. Please supply the neat, clean and hygienic water before undertaking such projects. People are left at the mercy of tanker mafia even in the capital of the country. They are forced to pay exorbitant price for tanker water usually supplied from polluted nullahs.

  5. It’s a good initiative by the PML-N Govt. – anything for the convenience of general public is good – atleast it’s in the right direction.

People who are critical on such projects will always continue to do so. Lot of questions were raised even at the time of motorway & metro projects as well but it turned out to be the most successful in the history of Pakistan.

  6. Transport infrastructure must be developed properly and should cover all routes. Though travelling by private cars or taxi service is also a good option for individuals, you can also share the ride with others by hiring even luxury cars as well
