CDA Urges Investment in Water-Related Projects Instead of Roads and Interchanges

RAWALPINDI: The Ghazi Barotha water project, aimed at providing 100 million gallons of water per day to the residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, has been delayed for four years due to non-approval of the revised PC-I, lack of funds, and non-allocation of the required budget.

The project was initially conceived in 2008 to meet the increasing demand for water in the twin cities.

However, the project’s PC-I, amounting to Rs 9.19 million was not approved, and the government of Punjab has yet to give consent for its funding share.

The capital city has been facing a water shortage as the existing resources are insufficient to meet the demand, which has been continuously increasing due to population growth and infrastructure development.

The CDA has been working on constructing new sectors (I-15, 1-12, E-12, C-14, and C-15) and launching new apartment schemes, but without exploring new sources of water.

Although several water projects have been announced in the past, none have been implemented.

According to officials from the CDA, the last water project, the Khanpur Dam, was initiated in the 1990s when the population of the city was roughly 600,000.

However, the 2017 census recorded a population of 2.2 million, and it is now estimated to be around 3 million.

The CDA officials have urged the civic agency to invest in water-related projects instead of roads and interchanges.
