RAWALPINDI: In a significant development, the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) budget for the upcoming fiscal year has allocated Rs. 17.4 million to provide clean water to the cantonment areas of Rawalpindi and Chaklala from the Khanpur Dam.
The project, which received approval from the Central Working Development Party in July 2017, has already incurred an expenditure of Rs. 845 million.
An additional amount of Rs. 35 million will be transferred in the next fiscal year to further support the initiative.
The federal government has also earmarked Rs. 17.4 million for this project in the upcoming year. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs. 885 million.
Under this initiative, the cantonment boards in Rawalpindi and Chaklala will receive an increased supply of water daily.
Previously, these boards faced a shortage as they were provided with only six million gallons of water daily, which proved to be insufficient.
With the implementation of this project, an additional three million gallons of water will be available, addressing the water shortage concerns of the residents in these cantonments.
Residents have expressed their frustrations, highlighting the indifference of the boards towards the water shortage issue despite the availability of rainwater in the dams.
They hope that this project will bring relief and resolve the persisting problem, particularly during the summer season when the demand for water increases.
