KARACHI: Residents of Korangi Crossing in Karachi have found a unique way to beat the summer heat as they gather near a leaking water supply line that carries water to the DHA and Clifton areas.
The residents, along with their children, bring their dirty laundry, pots, pans, and bottles to enjoy the free showers created by the leaks in the pipeline.
The sources added that even animals like camels, stray dogs, buffaloes, and cows also visit the pipeline to quench their thirst.
Additionally, the pipeline is overhead, some 15 to 20 feet above the ground, so water leaking from there flows down in the form of a shower with great pressure.
The residents, particularly the children, enjoy the showers as their mothers get busy washing clothes and utensils.
Some have also tied clotheslines from the mangrove trees or thorny keekar branches for drying the washing.
According to some residents, the pipeline is old and rusted, and it is cracked or broken at several points.
They claim that the line supplies water to Defense residents, and since they can afford tankers, the leaking water is being wasted. Hence, they feel that they have every right to use it without any guilt.
Meanwhile, Sikandar Ali of Askari Guards said that he and another security guard were deployed there for guarding the pipeline.
He stated that drug addicts steal iron bars from the pillars and damage the pipeline occasionally, though it is an old, rusted, and brittle line that has developed many cracks on its own.
He also pointed to another big water line submerged in the polluted water from the Korangi Industrial Area, saying that he sees water bubbling from that line, which belongs to the residents of Korangi and Ibrahim Hyderi.
