Karachi Fish Harbour Undergoes Rs1.5 billion Renovation Project, PA Told

KARACHI: The rehabilitation and renovation of the Karachi Fish Harbour, dubbed as the external services, have been ongoing with a cost of over Rs1.5 billion since 2019, according to Livestock and Fisheries Minister Abdul Bari Pitafi.

The minister made this statement in reply to lawmakers’ queries, stating that the European Union delisted Pakistani firms from exporting fish products to EU countries in 2007 due to the number of deficiencies in the system.

He stated that the renovation project is considered a long-term measure and includes the installation of a firefighting system, sewerage network system, underground water tank and pump room, water tower, external electrical works, roads and stone pitching, CCTV system, boundary wall, and rehabilitation of floating pontoons.

According to Pitafi, the number of palla fish in the Indus River, an anadromous fish that migrates into freshwater to lay eggs, is declining and nearing extinction due to a severe water shortage downstream Kotri.

He emphasized that the fish is unique as it swims straight against the strong currents of the Indus River for breeding purposes, adding that the breeding of the fish in fish hatcheries is not possible.

During the Sindh Assembly session, the lawmakers discussed various issues, including basic facilities for fishermen villages in district Thatta, shortage of water in downstream Kotri, and unnecessary expenditure on marriage and the evil of dowry.

Besides, Shehzad Qureshi presented a resolution demanding legislation to prevent unnecessary expenditure on marriage and the evil of dowry.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla informed the assembly that the government is already working on the bill, and the resolution is of no use.

The Deputy Speaker adjourned the house to Friday at 10 am for pre-budget discussions in the assembly.
