Punjab Villages to Pay Garbage Tax for Enhanced Sanitation

LAHORE: The Punjab Local Government Department is gearing up to implement a garbage tax on residential and commercial properties in villages spanning 2,468 union councils across the province.

As per the details, the responsibility for tax collection will be vested in sanitary workers and village committees.

Despite prior challenges in collecting garbage taxes from major cities, this move is part of the ‘Now Villages Will Shine’ project, aiming to provide sanitation facilities in villages equivalent to those in cities.

The project has seen the recruitment of 7,404 sanitary workers across the 2,468 union councils.

Additionally, 12,000 village councils have been established to ensure effective project execution through collaboration between sanitary workers and local representatives.

Each union council will employ three permanent workers and three on daily wages. To facilitate garbage collection, motorcycle rickshaws will be rented for Rs. 90,000 per month, amounting to a yearly budget of Rs. 5.018 billion.

The garbage tax varies according to property type, including a monthly fee of Rs. 50 for houses, Rs. 200 for shops, Rs. 1,000 for petrol pumps, marriage halls, and service stations, and Rs. 2,000 for industrial units, with an additional building fee of Rs. 500.

Officials project the monthly tax collection to reach Rs. 335.6 million from all the union councils, yielding an annual revenue of Rs4.02 billion.

While this initiative represents a broader effort to enhance sanitation facilities in both urban and rural areas within the province, its effectiveness, efficiency, and revenue generation remain to be seen.
