Sindh Cabinet Approves Rs.50 Bn for Reconstruction of Flood-Damaged Houses

KARACHI: The provincial cabinet approved Rs. 50 billion on Wednesday for the construction of damaged houses for flood victims, who would get the first installment of Rs. 50,000 each to begin the construction.

As per the details, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah presided over a meeting and decided that after the initial construction reached the plinth level, the remaining sum of Rs. 250,000 would be paid to their bank accounts.

According to Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, the cabinet had approved Rs. 50bn for the housing project to be used for “Retrospective Financing” for the time being in order to spend the amount on fully damaged houses and allow the project to start disbursement until the World Bank financing arrives.

He claimed that the cabinet made the decision to involve non-governmental organizations in order to make the entire process transparent.

It is relevant to mention here that 1.7 million houses were damaged by the flood, and that rebuilding them would cost Rs. 160 billion, of which the World Bank has committed Rs. 110 billion while the provincial government is making arrangements for the remaining amount with the federal government and other sources.

The Sindh government initially agreed to hire a company to build the destroyed houses, but then decided to give the affected individuals their compensation money so they may build on their own as per the viable designs.
