Sindh Environmental Protection Tribunal Allows Resumption of Malir Expressway Development

KARACHI: The Sindh Environmental Protection Tribunal permitted the provincial governments and other relevant authorities to resume the development work on Malir Expressway.

The tribunal instructed a monitoring committee to supervise the project’s development and ensure that over two dozen conditions outlined by the tribunal were met.

Retired Justice Nisar Ahmed Shaikh led the three-member tribunal that announced the verdict.

The tribunal resolved the appeal challenging the issuance of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Malir Expressway project by the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA).

The appellants had alleged that the EIA approval, granted on April 6 last year to the Malir Expressway Ltd., violated the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Review of Initial Environmental Examination and Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations, 2014.

The EIA approval had described the project as a six-lane dual carriageway stretching 38.75 kilometers, beginning before the Jam Sadiq Bridge on Korangi Road, continuing along the right bank of Malir River, and ending on M-9 near DHA City on the outskirts of Karachi.
