Sindh Mass Transit Authority Approves Subsidies for People’s Bus Service

KARACHI: The Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, chaired the tenth board meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) in Karachi.

During the meeting, the decisions taken in the 9th board meeting were approved, marking progress in various initiatives aimed at enhancing the public transportation system in the province.

One of the significant decisions made in the meeting was the consideration of providing subsidies for the People’s Bus Service, following approval by the Cabinet during the board meeting.

This move is expected to make public transportation more accessible and affordable for the general public.

In a remarkable step towards empowering women, the board also decided to initiate training programs for women drivers, specifically for women-only pink buses.

With this decision, women drivers will operate pink buses exclusively for female passengers, enhancing the sense of safety and convenience during women’s travel.

The board also discussed the feasibility studies for the second phase of the People’s Bus Service, which includes the addition of 500 buses, as well as the introduction of an environment-friendly electric taxi service.

The implementation of these plans is expected to significantly reduce travel problems for the people, providing relief and convenience to the public.

Additionally, the progress in the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project was brought under consideration during the meeting.

The Sindh government aims to expedite the completion of the Red Line BRT to ensure that the public can soon benefit from this modern transportation system.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Saleem Rajput, MDSMTA Kamal Dayo, DIG Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema, P&D representative Sikandar Shaikh, and CEO Trans Karachi Tufail Paliju.

Memon emphasized that empowering women in all fields is the vision of Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

The inclusion of female bus drivers not only promotes gender equality but also strengthens the sense of safety and security during women’s commutes.

  7. Before the Sindh Government improved the road system, all roads were ruined and the infrastructure of Karachi had collapsed. The sanitary system in many areas was in a terrible state, resulting in roads being flooded with dirty and filthy water from blocked sewage drains. This stagnant water blocked many passages, turning roads into impassable routes. The bus service provided little benefit in such conditions, often exacerbating traffic congestion. Furthermore, the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) projects transformed major roads into narrow pathways due to construction, causing severe traffic jams. These efforts did not bring any significant benefits to the general public unless and until the overall infrastructure and road system in Karachi are rebuilt by the Sindh Government.

  8. Assalam alaikum I’m resident of Karachi Appreciate you for efforts for common people but these efforts need some requirements before operation of traffic such as sewerage n water supply system also other utilities Wich laid under the road.

  9. Unquestionably, the road system has suffered greatly. Regional and local planning does not exist. Transport is introduced first, then roads and other infrastructure are developed, and finally, roads are dug for drainage and utility service lines. Inadequate and leaking drainage systems build up stormwater and precipitation, further deteriorating the roads. Heavy traffic congestion and unlawful encroachment problems make it more difficult for the underprivileged to afford to fuel their vehicles. They also trap emergency vehicles on the roadways, endangering lives and taking property. Contrary to traffic police who clear the roads, these officers are mostly engaged in challan or bribe collection. However, despite the introduction of numerous transport plans in the past, they were all abandoned due to mismanagement, and corruption.
