Inauguration of New Islamabad Airport Delayed Till December 2017

The inauguration of New Islamabad International Airport has been delayed till December 2017, it is learned.

Earlier former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had set a deadline to inaugurate the new Islamabad International Airport on August 14, 2017, but due to yet incomplete link roads, the inauguration has been delayed.

The new Islamabad Airport will now be made operational by year end in December 2017.

Link roads are currently being laid down by the National Highway Authority (NHA).

This was revealed in a Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat which met with Talha Mehmood in the chair here on Tuesday.

Later briefing the media, committee chairman said that 97 percent work of the new Airport has been completed while gas, electricity and water issues have been resolved which is satisfactory.

“But due to flawed planning by NHA, link roads are still not completed and now the Airport would be inaugurated in December 2017”, said Talha Mehmood.

Committee chairman said that new Islamabad International Airport project was initiated in 2007 with estimated cost of Rs. 32 billion, but due to flawed planning, it was delayed repeatedly.

He further said that NHA has now given the commitment to complete link roads by November 2017.

Earlier Secretary Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Director General Pakistan CAA Air Marshal Asim Suleman informed the committee about progress on Islamabad International Airport and Gawadar Airport.

About new Islamabad Airport it was revealed that there were 19 projects including 6 airsides, 6 terminals and 7 landside projects. Airside has been completed by 99 percent, terminal buildings are completed by 96 percent while land projects are completed by 99 percent.

An overall completion of 97 percent of the project has been achieved.

The committee also reviewed the Gawadar Airport. It was briefed that China will complete Gawadar port as part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor.

The airport will be constructed on 4300 acres. The land has been acquired and fenced. But despite the passage of two years, construction is yet to be started.

The project would be completed in 32 months, but no institutions knew about it. For early construction, China government will be contacted, said the committee.

The runway of the existing Gawadar airport has been extended and expecting that jet flights would be started in one to two days.
