Import of Mobile Phones Reduced by 76 Percent

Import of mobile phones has reduced by 76 percent during the first nine months of the current fiscal year as compared to the phones imported during the same period of last fiscal year, according to Federal Bureau of Statistics.

The country imported cell phones worth $139.480 million during July-March period of the current fiscal year against the phones import of $581.807 million during the same period of last fiscal year, depicting a decline of $442.327 million or 76 percent.

On a yearly basis, the import bill of cell phones has shrunk by $62.305 million or 83.72 percent during March 2009 coming down to $12.114 million as compared to $74.419 million of phones imported during March 2008.

    come to think of it, the government might just have some good idea’s once in a while.

    also, given that there’s at least a $400 million unfulfilled market for cellphones, it might be a good enough impetus for someone to start manufacturing local cell phones :)

  • yeah foreign echange saved but think of it there are so much less newer models in the market as there is no import, considering there is no pakistani manufacturer!

  • This import of mobiles should exceed because our 65 to 70 percent wholesale market depend upon Afghanistan and central Asian states. Pakistan has very less potential with respect to this. We lost major business Govt. Departments have no idea where these mobiles go they just think that the mobiles come in pakistan. We lost our exports.

We lost our exports. secondly due to the china mobile import the monopoly of the big companies become break so any one can now purchase mobile in cheap rates. So this strategy also not in the favor of consumers to make limited.
