Zong to Have 3,000 4G and 5,500 3G Cell Sites by Year End: CEO

Zong will have over 3,000 4G and 5,500 3G cell sites by year end, said Mr. Liu Dianfeng, Chairman and CEO of Zong, during an exclusive interview with ProPakistani on the sidelines of recently conducted training session for PTA officials at Zong Headquarters in Islamabad.

He said that his company has already deployed more than 500 4G cell sites in Pakistan while another 3700 cell sites are now 3G enabled.

CEO said that Zong has invested over USD 300 million dollar in Pakistan for newer technologies, especially in 4G; despite the fact that penetration of 4G compatible handsets in Pakistan is low, but its growing fast enough to give his company the required confidence to invest heavily in 4G.

Mr. Liu said that there is tremendous potential for data services in Pakistan, especially because fixed line services cannot fulfil the market demand and this is where mobile broadband is going to play a crucial role. For the purpose, Zong customers should expect a series of dongle and wingle products during coming months.

Zong CEO said that definition for quality of services for data services should be revised. Instead of any benchmarks, he said, telcos will have to monitor customers’ experience to meet quality of service standards. For example, if there’s this customer who can’t access a website just because the server is down, then there is nothing much a telco can do, unless these websites are hosted at a tele-host with-in the telco.

Mr. Liu said that they are in process of taking on-board popular internet companies for getting them hosted on Zong’s tele-host to ensure smooth end-to-end connectivity and quality of service.

  • Oh! You spent a lot!! LOL!! Zong brought 4G by spending 500$ million dollars whereas Warid didn’t spent a single cent!!!!

    • Aamir, if you encounter a barking/commenting dog on a road, will you stop your car (say a E class)? Obviously, you wont. But I will. And i will cut its tail and sell it to CDGL for Rs.50. One less rabid dog on streets is an effort worth it.

  • Time to lose some weight or someone will cross 200 kg mark by end of year .. :P

On a serious note loved the interview and the new vlogger style of ProPak.. Way to GO!

  • one simple question . if one site is LTE . will the same site serve for 2g and 3g too . or only LTE?

    • LTE site is same as 2g or 3G but if site is 2G or 3G, they have to change Ant’s plus Software for LTE and new cabinet and other hardware for LTE and when you run out of LTE coverage, it fall back to 3G first.. These days there are equipment which goes to the top of the tower so nothing is on the ground and no body can mess with it.

    • Zong will not introduce new exciting packages.
Zong’s services are all time worst.
Yeah sirf acha internet isi waja se derahi hain k in k uper ziadaload nhi hai. Jun hi load parega to internet thap ho jaye ga… isi waja se ache packages nhi derahe k users bulk mein data use karain gay to network down….

  • Karachi mein (Naz Plaza M.A Jinnah Road) mein pichle 5 years se siwaye Mobilink k kisi bhi network ki 2G coverage nhi hai yeah log 3G kiya launch karain gay.

  • The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked 27.5 million active SIMs which could not be verified till May 15. Some 75.5 million out of total 103 million active subscriber identity modules (SIMs) have been verified by the PTA during its verification drive which ended on Friday.
The PTA has accordingly directed CMOs to block all unverified SIMs. However, these SIMs could be unblocked by the owner by visiting any sale channel and performing successful biometric verification, said a PTA press release here Saturday.
The SIM re-verification drive through Biometric Verification System (BVS), initiated under the directions of National Action Plan, has been successfully completed.
The Ministry of Information Technology (MOIT) and the PTA were tasked to carry-out verification of all existing SIMs through BVS in January 2015.
The task which looked difficult initially as the previous governments failed to do despite demand by law enforcement agencies. However, it could now be made possible through all-out support of relevant stakeholders and dedicated efforts of all particularly, PTA, MOIT, Ministry of Information (MoI), the Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) and National Database Reconciliation Authority (NADRA).
The PTA appreciated the people for their support to make the the SIMs re-verification process a success considering it to be a national cause.
The MOIT and the PTA undertook measures not only to make the process smooth and transparent but also to facilitate general public.
Extensive awareness campaigns through SMS, electronic (TV & Radio) an digital media were run. In addition, an alternate verification process was deployed to facilitate old age, disabled and overseas Pakistanis.
The CMOs were asked to re-verify their complete subscribers’ bases irrespective of their current status i.e. active or dormant. Some 21 million SIMs were verified from the dormant base while 17 million SIMs were already verified through BVS between August 1, 2014 and January 12, 2015. New SIMs were only issued through the process of BVS.
It is believed that the effects of the re-verification drive shall go a long way in ensuring a safer Pakistan, said the PTA.
After the conclusion of this major milestone, the PTA will now carry out a third party audit of the whole exercise to verify its authenticity.
In this regard, Expression of Interest (EoI) for hiring of a third party auditor has already been floated.
