Mobile phone imports in Pakistan have increase by 7.95 percent during the first four month (July-October) of the current financial year (2015-16) as compared to the same period of previous year.

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), total imports of mobile phone stood at $242.451 million while they were $224.594 million in the same period last year. One of the reasons for the increase in imports is the introduction of low cost and high performance phones by online stores.

Overall telecom imports saw significant decline of 12.39% during July- October 2015-16 compared to the same period in the last year. Total imports were recorded at $449.018 million compared to $512.511 million in the same period in the last year.

Other telecom apparatus import also witnessed significant decline of 28 percent during this period as it stood at $206.567 million during July-October (2015-16) against $287.917 million during the same period of last year.

Telecom experts are of the view that heavy taxation on the sector is the major reason behind the decline in telecom sector. They are of the view that the figures show that environment is no more conducive for the telecom sector and ma further affect FDI and investment in the country.
