Pakistan to Auction 850MHz Spectrum Ahead of 4G Spectrum

Government of Pakistan is looking to auction 850 MHz frequency ahead of 1800Mhz spectrum auction, leftover 4G spectrum that remained unsold during last spectrum auction in 2014.

This was decided at a high level meeting chaired by Finance Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on matters relating to Telecom sector with particular focus on frequency spectrum demand.

The Minister of State for IT, Anusha Rehman Khan briefed the meeting on the spectrum demand scenario and the progress with regard to holding of spectrum auction.

The meeting reviewed the spectrum demand scenario while considering the “Market Assessment report” of PTA that was prepared by international consultant and the evolving data growth due to mobile broadband uptake.

In view of reports presented and discussions on Ministry of IT and PTA’s recent engagement with the industry, it was proposed that government should auction of 850 MHz frequency ahead of planned 1800MHz spectrum auction.

The Finance Minister agreed to the proposal and directed that the process may be expedited with complete transparency.

It was also agreed during the meeting that an appropriate amount of spectrum needs to be made available to the industry to enhance the ever evolving requirement of international quality data services for Pakistani consumers.

In this regard all stakeholders including MoIT, PTA and FAB will work together to quickly conclude further procedural measures for making requisite spectrum available through the auction process.

Minister for Law & Justice, Zahid Hamid, Attorney General for Pakistan, Ashter Ausaf, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Law, Barrister Zafarullah, members of Spectrum Advisory Committee, and senior officials of Ministry of IT, Ministry of Finance, PTA and FAB also participated in the meeting.

  • How broad is the 850Mhz spectrum? And can it be used to provide 3g/ 4g services?

  • 2G 2018 mein kill ho rahi ha world mein , or apple or samsung apny phones say 2G k band b kill kr rahy hein hamari govt. technology say be-Khabar ha, jis din 5G officially launch ho gai mobile makers apni products say 2G band he nikal dein gy , ap google search krein ab 2G ka end ha jaldi he

        • Well as far as I have searched google 850mhz can be and is being for LTE. 850 mhz never meant 2G. It can be used for 2G, 3G, LTE.

          • Writer ny q kaha ha phir 850mhz spectrum before 4G spectrum ??? (Yahan pay 850 mhz 2G ko he kaha gea ha bhai )

            • no bro you are mistaken, this 850 MHz band will either be used for 3G or 4G. Not for 2G
Operators have already stopped investing in 2G

              • Article ko edit kia gea ha mery comment krny k baad , pehly mention nhi kia gea tha 4G

      • Apko pata ni shaid k jb 2014 mein auction hoi the tab b aik license 850mhz wala b tha , new as well as existing companies k liy , lekin kisi ny nhi lia , agr 850 mhz ke dobara auction hoti ha to phir b nhi ly ga koi b , ap b yahan ho or me b , ooo bhai mery developed countries say to 2G ka name b ab khatam ho raha ha or uy log abi b 850 mhz sale kr rahy hein jo k ab khatam hony ko ha ,,, haan ap 2100 wala license offer kro companies ko zara sasta kr k to phir umeed ha k companies purcgase kr lein 850mhz ka nhi ly ga koi b bhai
Or chiku bety uy batein tumhari samjh say oper hein tumhari to abi apni umer ha (mitti khany ke bola)

      • Cheku mera beta pehly wiki open kr k 2G likh k search maro phir aana me mitti khilata hoon tumhein

    • I’m not sure what you have been googling but there is no way 2G is being killed anytime soon.

There are so manyy developed countries which still rely on 2G coverage for their less populated areas.

Take USA for example. not all areas have 3G/4G coverage covered by all networks. In some areas you’ll find 3G coverage of AT&T but 2G coverage of T-mobile.
Similarly a few areas are covered with 3G techonology of T-mobile but 2G coverage of verizon and sprint. and it goes on..

So despite being a developed country not all networks have completely covered up US soil with 3G/4G coverage. Hence, when someone says 2G will be killed in 2018. it sounds a little funny.

      • Google aik search engine hota ha , jis mein wikipedia likh k search krein to aik site aa jati ha samny screen pay , Wikipedia , is site ko open krein phir search bar mein 2G likhein or us article ko read krein , agr samjh na aay to translater mein daal k urdu mein parhein , , agr ho saky to baad mein wikipedia ke application download kr lein kafi info mily ge , Allah paak apna fazal farmay (AAMeen)

  • I am wondering who will come forward to purchase this spectrum from ever unreliable Govt of Pakistan. Their policies are inconsistent with regard to taxation and regulation. Every now and then, the services are shut on the pretext of security concern. The customers are squeezed day by day.

    • Not possible at all. The frequency doesn’t matter, the band size does. If a company purchases 40 Mhz on any frequency, only then can they unlock 4G’s full potential. And no 4G company in India has more than 25 Mhz of 4G spectrum.

      • True, India gets maximum of 23Mbps on 4G and around 2.5Mbps on 3G, Pakistan telecom sector far ahead of Indian telecom sector, we can easily get the average speed of 3G is 10Mbps and 30+ on 4G

        • another foolish thinking.mobile sold on amazon india are quite cheap and many big companies have assembly and manufacturing plants there. sad fact is our govt tries to copy india by putting huge tax on imports while giving no initiative to local industry (complex taxation and approval of manufacturing plus no gas or electricity. Sooner or later all of our industry will be killed because world is moving to automation and thus they will be able to offer highest quality products on dirt cheap prices while our stupid govt will keep on filling bhata in the name of tax and then siphon it to panama.

  • new interface ki samjh hi nahee aa rahi, pata hi nahee chal raha k kab nai post aai??? please restore old design

  • does it even matter when most telecom operators are not interested in increasing existing 3g/4g infrastructure?
