Facebook is Forcing Mobile Web Users to Switch to Messenger

It seems that Facebook is going forward with its radical plan to popularize its Messenger service. Some users are already getting a message announcing “Your conversations are moving to Messenger” if they are accessing the messaging option from anywhere other than the app.

So far, Messenger hasn’t quite gotten the same amount of popularity as the main app, a thing which could be down to the size of the apps made by Facebook. As a result, a lot of users have resorted to messaging through the mobile web version of the app when the need arises rather than installing Messenger.

Right now, the date when the shift will happen hasn’t been announced but it could happen anytime this summer. There’s no telling whether the Facebook Lite app will see the doors of messaging shut on it too. But by all accounts that shouldn’t be happening, at least not for now.

Facebook has been hard at work for the past few years to make Messenger a more mainstream platform for its users, adding features such as stickers, chatheads or even games to make people jump ships. If indications are right, ads could be coming to the service soon. However, it faces a pretty steep upward climb with its Whatsapp service providing the biggest hurdle.

Messenger is no failure in its own right in any way, thanks to more than 900 million downloads but Facebook isn’t afraid of losing a few faithful users in the way if it means making Messenger a more mainstream app.
