Re-Verify Your NADRA CNIC and Family Tree through SMS

NADRA has formally launched the SMS service for family members verification. This service allows any registered CNIC holder to check who else is registered under the same family tree.

If there is any person who isn’t a family member and registered as a part of your family, you can report it to NADRA, so that the authority can take appropriate action against such individuals.

NADRA has started sending SMS messages to the family heads regarding the procedure, however you can still check the status even if you aren’t the head of family.

How to Verify NADRA CNIC through SMS?

  • Send your CNIC number (with or without dashes) to 8008
  • In return you will get the names of all registered persons in your family.
  • If you’re satisfied with the list, reply the message with 2, but if there is any person registered as your family member you don’t know ─ notify the authority by replying with 1.

Family heads, or even if you are not head of a family, can send their NADRA CNIC number to 8008, and in response they will get the names of people with-in their family tree.

How to Identify Illegal NADRA CNIC Holders?

Just in case if you don’t know, NADRA maintains the list of members in each family. There’s no way of getting a card, unless its registered in one of the family trees that are already registered with NADRA.

Illegal NADRA CNIC card holders are inducted in family trees, to look legit. However, with this 8008 service you can identify any unknown names/persons who are appearing in your family tree.

All such unknown names or persons should be reported to NADRA immediately.

There is one major drawback of this service is that anyone who knows your CNIC number can get a complete list of your family members and their names.

Please note

We are receiving reports that SMS aren’t currently going through Telenor. We are anticipating that service will be available on all networks pretty soon.

Also, this re-verification drive will officially start from July 1st, 2016.

      • I am not sure why you get this message. I used ufone postpaid connection to check this. I received my family members name which I responded with “2” (all good) and than I received message “Thank You — NADRA Re-VERIFICATION Service”

  • It is working for Ufone, I’ve just checked now & the list i get was also correct & replied them with 2.

  • What about families living out of pakistan, like saudi arabia dubai UAE etc. How they can verify their family members cnic numbers?

    • I guess there should be a way to use country code or some thing similar like that in order to sent sms from other country, try first adding +92 it might work !!

  • From Warid: I got reply of my all family members list and its is correct. I replied it with 2.
Shall any one confirm that my Nadra CNIC Family Verification completes or i have to visit any NADRA office to face the long queue ?

  • Works on ufone. Replied with 2. Are they suppose to tell us that we are verified now? No response after sending 2.

  • For tree verification, are they sending just the names, or, CNIC numbers as well? If there is an Aslam in my tree, how do I know that Aslam is indeed my family member, and not someone with same name but different CNIC?

  • A few things I can’t help wondering:
Suppose there’s an outsider in my family tree and he/she has an ID card issued. He sends a message to 8008 & in turn receives the whole list of my family members and then quite conveniently, replies with 2 successfully fooling this system into believing that there’s nothing wrong with my family tree.

So is there anything the real family member can do in such a situation?

What happens next if you let nadra know that there indeed is something wrong with your family tree?

  • It says the service will officially start from July 1st, If I make a confirmation before the said date, will it count?

    • That isn’t a big issue. You can rectify this by either going to an NRC or through the e-FRC online application on Pak ID portal. This initiative is to ensure no outsider is part of your family.

  • the SMS service 8008 for verification of CNIC Details. It is a good step by NADRA in current situation but at the same time this service has security flaws as anyone who knows my CNIC number or a photocopy of my CNIC can access to the every details of my family members with names and gender. In the disorganized and risky environment of Pakistan, this flaw may lead to other security threats. Therefore there should have been a secret way or code, or the name of mother only known to the individual or the family head who can verify my registration details.

    • Sir do you think they care about your personal information? No one is going to ask them how the family tree got ghosts.. who accessed their Database? How? Its easy to put burden of proof of being citizen of Pakistan on the people of Pakistan :)

  • Why do one need to send his CNIC number when our phone numbers are already registered against our CNICs? One ought to send a blank sms and NADRA could then extract our CNIC number against that sim number and verify ones family tree.

  • For those who are out of Pakistan is there any alternative option for verification like by visiting nadra Web portal?

    • For oversees Pakistanis, this facility is going to be available on the Pak ID portal soon.

  • It is a good step by NADRA in current situation but at the same time this service has security flaws as anyone who knows your CNIC number or have a photocopy of your CNIC can access to the very detail of your family members with names and gender. In the chaotic and unsafe environment of Pakistan, this flaw may lead to other security threats. Therefore there should have been a secret way, a code or access through only registered mobile number or email only known to the concerned individual or the family head who can verify his or her registration details.

As in all the file records of banks, schools, courts, telephone, electricity, mobile phone, Internet providers, academic institutions, and even the so called promotional schemes of various companies, the photocopy of CNIC is a must that can easily expose the all important CNIC number to the unauthorized persons who can mal handle the vital information related to that person.

    • I’m glad someone has pointed out the privacy concern.
From what I can read from the ads in the newspaper, the details will be only sent to the mobile of the Family Head.

I’ll have it tested and update you.

      • No…. on any cell phone number! You just need to type in the CNIC number and send it to 8008, anyone can access these details without any problem. Your driver, the meter reader, the shopkeeper, any banker, clerk, …just name it. If the CNIC is of the head of the family, there will be full detail and otherwise the full detail of your family members.

    • Update: I was able to pull names of at least 4 families for I was definitely not the head.
Clearly a security and privacy risk since the PII can be stolen and lead to Identity Thefts.
