Punjab to Launch App to Combat Women Harassment

Every day our newsfeed is flooded with reports of violence inflicted on women, followed by flashy statements from our government officials to provide justice to the oppressed. Such late gestures may appease the masses but no level of retribution can erase the painful memories that seep deep into the minds of the victims and scars them for life.

Therefore, instead of responding once all is lost, Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) in collaboration with the Punjab Commission on Status of Women is designing an Android application to prevent the crime beforehand.

How Does The Android App Function?

  • The app will issue a warning signal that will allow victims, under a possible threat, to inform the Police Integrated Command, Control and Communication (PPIC3) officials about their location.
  • Once notified, the initial response team, comprising of the Dolphin Force, Police Response Unit and Police Stations Beat Officers will be dispatched to the crime scene.

Educating the Masses

The idea behind the app is not only to provide immediate help to victims but also to generate public awareness regarding harassment and its broader definition.

The app contains two to three modes alongside a panic button in case of emergency. In the event of a critical situation, calls made from the app will automatically be directed to the 15 helpline, where specially trained operators will cater to the victims needs in an apt way.

Reacting out of impulse would not help restrict crime but rather ignite it so it is very important to set the line between what defines harassment and what doesn’t.

According to Shamsher Haider, Deputy Chief System Integration (PSCA):

“Definitions of what constitutes harassment and what does not will be built into the application, so apart from helping out the citizens we can also educate them,”

Changing Attitudes

The successful application of such an app could do wonders for those in distress. However, the same cannot be said for the existing justice system of our country. The insolent treatment of female victims by the law enforcement agencies has always disrupted any chances of redemption for the oppressed.

Laws for women rights and protection already exist in the rule books and are often chanted valiantly by human rights activists but hard facts stand tall as instead of been placated for their wounds, they are mishandled and charged for an error on their part rather than the aggressors.

Therefore, it is important that alongside making the prerequisite technological advancements, dogmatic behavior on part of harassers and intimidators are checked and corrected to ensure that the oppressed can actually rely on the system that was made to protect them.

  • PITB is a role model for other provinces. All the money spent on such institutions have a quick return. I hope other provinces follow the example and set up such an institute to serve their public.

  • “ZEOZ” is the best app for it; all you need to know how to use and implement it.
