Huawei Hits the 10 Million Sales Milestone with P9 and P9 Plus

Huawei has come a long way to become the world’s third largest smartphone maker. With predictions backing it to grab the second spot next, perhaps one of the biggest targets is to position itself in the high-end category as well.

That target seems increasingly achievable now. As of latest reports, the company’s flagship P9 and P9 Plus handsets have been sold more than 10 million times worldwide. This is the first time that the company has hit the milestone. The news was revealed by Huawei’s CEO of Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu.

“First revealed in April 2016,” Yu said, “the dual-lens Huawei P9/P9 Plus devices were Huawei’s first flagship smartphones to be developed in collaboration with legendary German camera brand Leica. This extensive partnership has already set a new benchmark for advanced smartphone camera technology and delivered outstanding photography experiences to consumers.”

Huawei also recorded shipments of 33.59 million smartphones, 23-percent more than the same period last year. Of these, around 44-percent were either high-end or mid-range phones, not bad for a company which started at the bottom.

Huawei has also surpassed its goal of shipping 140 million smartphones for the year. Huawei has been expecting to sell about 12 million units of its flagship phones by the time their successors are revealed, and that seems increasingly achievable, too. The next year will also see the company roll out a toned-down, minimalist version of the EMUI theme, to make it more suitable to the tastes of that market.

While Huawei has to do a fair bit to catch Samsung, which sold 10 million phones within the S7’s first month, and Apple, which sold 13 million phones within the first week, it is certainly going on the right path.
