Pokemon Go Earned Almost $1 Billion Last Year

The hit augmented-reality game Pokemon Go is getting another feather in its cap after it was announced that the most-downloaded game of 2016 was also the one to collect the most revenue: $950 million.

Overall, it was the third most profitable game of the year, behind Monster Strike (2016’s topper) Clash Royale, an impressive achievement considering the phone was released in only July (limited release at that) and hence was available for less than half a year.

Made $800 Million in Just 110 Days

Pokemon Go, the first app from the famous Pokemon anime/playing card series to hit mobile phones, was also the fastest to hit $800 million in revenue. It reached this milestone just 110 days into its release. The former quickest game to hit $800 million, Candy Crush Saga, took 250 days to get there. Puzzle & Dragons and Clash of Clans took more than 400 and 500 days, respectively.

7 Million Hours Played Each Day

At its height, which was around Halloween on October 31st, the game’s users clocked in around 7 million hours each day.

According to Niantic, the game’s developer, users had recorded a total distance of 8.7 billion kilometers on the app. The game’s reign was undoubtedly affected by its banning in China, though, it didn’t seem to stop it from shattering records.

The game’s progress was reported in the year’s retrospective report by App Annie. The game has so far been downloaded more than 500 million times since its July launch, but as of now it seems that the hype is finally dead.

Niantic has released a new update with bugfixes after a long time, but it is likely it won’t be enough with itself. But at least, as was evident during its peak season, Pokemon Go was the most important title to hit mobile gaming in 2016.
