PTA Exempts Basic IT Equipment, Laptops, Watches For Type Approvals

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has exempted basic IT equipment and devices for type approvals. Devices include goods that are used in the daily life for personal and commercial purposes.

The equipment includes Personal Computers (Desktop and Laptop), Wifi-enabled Tablet PCs (Non-SIM), Smart Watches with the function of Bluetooth and Wifi (non-SIM).

The authority also exempted a number of fundamental Networking Equipment which are used essentially for ICT applications varying from small to large scale set up. These equipment include Switches, Firewalls, Servers and Storage Devices.

PTA also granted exemption to GPS Devices, RFID/Bluetooth/NFC devices whose utility is being promoted for various applications especially in the small and large scale businesses in different sectors.

These equipment do not require any Non-Objection Certificate (NOC) from PTA for importing from different countries. However, procedures of customs are applied on their imports.

The exemption list from the authority will remove the ambiguity at the Custom’s level as importers now are not dependent on any certificates for imports of such items.

However, the authority should come forward to exempt various other devices used with SIMs to promote the utility and literacy of IT and technology in the society.

Reducing the cost of equipment through exemptions and wavers of duties will lead to affordable access of technological equipment among the masses which will certainly benefit in aiding the socio-economic development of the country.

Custom duty and taxes will still be charged on imported goods, it only saves the hassle of getting an NOC letter from PTA for the items mentioned above. That too for private individuals as official importers get the NOC approved before goods reach the port.
