Panama Case: SECP & SBP Heads Ordered to Attend Next Hearing

Heads of Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) were summoned at the Supreme Court (SC) today.

They were part of a list of nominees submitted for the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) which is investigating into the Panama Papers case.

A special bench of 3 judges, chaired by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan summoned the heads of the SBP and SECP. Additionally, grade 18 officers were also summoned by the apex court.

“Findings Should Be Open and Transparent”

The bench said that all findings must be transparent and open. Justice Azmat added that the bench will ensure that all of the proceedings are impartial and transparent.

He continued saying that:

We will look at the list and will approve the names for the JIT,

Following today’s court hearing the next hearing is adjourned until Friday.

Formation of JIT

After the Panama Case judgment was announced on April 20th a 3 judge bench was created to implement the Supreme Court’s decision. A Joint Investigation Team was constituted to probe into offshore accounts and properties held by the Sharif family.

The special bench, created by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, consists of Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh and Justice Ijazul Ahsan.

Most of the Pakistani population do not support the Panama verdict. According to the Gallup report released recently, only 1 in 3 people liked the Supreme Court’s decision.
