LG’s Q8 is a Mini Flagship with Dual Screens and Cameras

LG’s two dual display smartphones haven’t made much of an impact in the market. That hasn’t stopped the South Korean company from trying though.

Their latest dual-display smartphone: the Q8, is second to V20 only in terms of specifications.

Design and Display

The design follows the same philosophy of the high end phones from LG. Compared to the V20, however, the removable battery has been dropped in favor of IP67 water and dust protection. The Q8 weighs 146 grams and is 8mm thick. Just like the V20, the fingerprint sensor sits right underneath the dual cameras.

The display is its most distinguishing element. The primary display is smaller at 5.2-inches but has the same QHD resolution. Display brightness can go all the way up to 500 nits.

The secondary display measures the same size as on the V20, and has the same 160 x 1040 resolution. It is largely used to display notifications and quick access to controls. Protection is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 4.

It also features a 32 bit quad-DAC for the audiophiles out there.

Internals and Storage

Under the hood, you get the slightly older Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, with 4 GB RAM and 32 GB of expandable storage.

It will come with Android 7.0 Nougat with LG’s UX 5.0 custom skin.

Camera(s)

There is a dual-camera setup on the back, with a 13 MP lens paired with an 8 MP wide-angle sensor. There’s optical image stabilization, laser autofocus and a dual LED flash. An added bonus is the 24 bit/48 kHz stereo sound recording.

The front camera features a wide-angle 5-megapixel lens.

Battery

The battery capacity is set at 3000 mAh, and is not removable to accommodate the water and dust-proof design.

The LG Q8 will be priced at €599 in Europe and around $600 in the US. This kind of price for a “has-been” phone doesn’t seem very appealing but only time will tell how well the Q8 fares against its competition.
