NAB Arrests Former University Director Over Embezzlement

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Karachi has arrested Naeem Akhtar , former Director P&D Federal Urdu University of Arts Science and Technology.

He was wanted in the investigation being conducted against the management of the said university on the charges of embezzlement of university funds under various cases.

The accused has been accused of illegally awarding the contract for provision of security services for the university campus to M/s Sardar Security Services Pvt Ltd. In doing so, he bypassed the relevant rules of tender process and awarded the contract as a favor.

The illegal act on his part resulted in loss of Rs. 82 million to the national exchequer since Urdu University is a public sector institute funded by the HEC and the government.

The accused has made a disclosure of his involvement in the crime with other members of the university management. All of the mentioned people will now be included in the investigation. Naeem Akhtar will be presented before the Accountability Court in Karachi tomorrow for a physical remand.

It must be mentioned that National Accountability Bureau is being converted into National Accountability Commission (NAC). The government is preparing a final draft bill which is expected to be approved soon. A 20 member parliamentary committee is working on it in order to resolve the issue of plea bargains and bring a change in Article 184(3).
