STEVTA to Train Local Youth in Skills Required for Thar Projects

A Memorandum of Understanding has been inked between Thar Foundation and Sindh Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (STEVTA) to train Thar’s youth in demand-driven technical trades that will have better employability in current and future mining projects in Thar.

Official sources told the media that, according to the agreement, STEVTA will train youth from the Tharparkar district. They will be initially trained in refrigeration and air conditioning skills.

Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company and Engro Powergen Thar Limited will employ the trained human resource in the Thar Coal project at Block II.

Sources said that the training program will increase the chances of Thari youth’s employability in the future coal mining and power generation projects as well.

They added that the first batch of trainees will start their training in December 2017 at Government Polytechnic Institute Mithi.

Thar Coal project is one of the biggest projects currently underway in Pakistan. You may have heard about it on the media with TV anchors or news casters mentioning it here and there. It has been termed the “black gold mine” by some as well.

If the project continues at the current pace, it can potentially generate 2,700 MW electricity for Pakistan by 2020. Thar Block II contains enough coal (1.57 billion tonnes) to produce 5,000 MW of energy for the next 50 years.
