Asus ROG G703: Monster Specs, Unmatched Features and a “Sell Kidneys” Price

While Nvidia’s Max-Q has made sure that desktop-grade gaming can be done on an ultrabook sized package, Asus’s latest laptop shuns the approach in favour of a more traditional gaming laptop. It makes up for it with some of the most powerful hardware you can get in a portable these days.

The new ROG G703 comes with a 17.3″ IPS display on the front, kept at 1080p by default (available options go up to 3840 X 2160). Most-importantly, it supports Nvidia’s G-Sync technology and a 144 Hz refresh rate.

Hardware

Under the hood, you get the Core i7-7820HK processor, which is overclocked by default. That is accompanied with an overclocked GTX 1080 graphics card with 8 GB VRAM, and you begin to understand why even Max-Q design may not have been enough.

Adding to that is the 32 GB DDR4 2400 Mhz RAM (four 8 GB modules), two SSD RAID 0 drives (256 GB each) as well as a single 1 TB 2.5″ hard drive. Further storage options, such as dual 512 GB SSDs and a 2 TB hard drive are available, too.

Connectivity

For connections, you get a USB-C port, 4 USB-A ports, Ethernet, HDMI 2.0, mini DisplayPort, card reader and headphone jack. For wireless, you get Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi ac. There are dual 2W and 3W speakers for, as well as an HD webcam.

The keyboard features RGB backlighting, with 2.5mm key travel. All of this takes its toll on the design, and the G703 weighs almost 5 kg, being 5 inches thick. Also, it is not the most tasteful of designs in the gaming laptop market in recent times, being as much a departure as it can be from Razer’s design language.

Battery and Price

This behemoth of a laptop houses a 71 Wh battery, which wouldn’t last long considering the hardware it packs.

You’re expected to pay top dollar for specifications such as these, and Asus in this particular case demands $3499, alongside a lot of motivation to lug the thing around in your backpack (if it fits in one).
