Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) and United States Consulate, Lahore signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a six month long English Language Course at TEVTA Secretariat here on Wednesday.
Chairman TEVTA, Irfan Qaiser Sheikh, US Consul General Lahore, Elizabeth Trudeau, officials of Lahore Institute of Future Education (LIFE) and Education for Skills Development Association (ESDA) were present on occasion.
According to the MoU, LIFE and ESDA will operate the courses at four TEVTA institutes in Sialkot, Multan and Khanewal, which will be funded by US Department of State Project “English Works”.
LIFE will start the course at Government Vocational Training Institute for Women, Sialkot and Government College of Technology for Boys, Sialkot. ESDA will offer the course at Government Technical Training Institute for Women Shah Rukn-e-Alam Colony, Multan and Government Technical Training Institute Peoples Colony, Khanewal.
While talking about the MOU, Chairman Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said that students from low income families will be given priority along with their academic history, as the key selection criteria will be monthly household income.
He further revealed that the total number of students will be 200, as 50 in Multan, 50 in Khanewal and 50 in Sialkot will be selected, whereas 50 percent quota will be reserved for TEVTA students attending regular classes at TEVTA institutes.
A Rs. 100 per day stipend will also be given to the students for their travel needs, he said. He said that English language is a dire need for the students of technical colleges, as technical education is very popular among under privileged students who choose this field after matric or intermediate.
It is considered to be the shortest way to start a career either by taking a job or by starting a self employed business, he added.
Chairman TEVTA continued that English language is now very important for technical education as it is necessary for professionalism and it will help the students when they go to foreign countries for jobs.
“The course has been planned as per Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif’s vision of utilizing foreign expertise to empower our youth therefore we are working with the German, Turkish and Japanese organizations,” he added.
